The Context

How did we get Here?

Africa is transforming rapidly. Very rapidly. With a growing youth population that is expected to reach over 830 million by 2050, the future of the continent could be one of promise or peril, depending on how the continent manages this ‘youth bulge’. Meanwhile, Africa is home to 8 out of the 10 fastest growing economies in the world, and there is nowhere else where the need for digital skills is more crucial.

It is therefore essential that structures be put in place to take advantage of the vast amount of opportunities and ease the ‘youth bulge’ into jobs of the future. In order to do that, learning opportunities need to be easily accessible, scalable, and consumable. And with that, a few driven and passionate techies started DeCodEd with the guiding question, ‘How can we democratise technology education across Africa?’

The Problem

Sustaining and leveraging communities

While there has been a significant amount of growth in the sub-saharan developer ecosystem over the past few years, there is still much to be done. Despite the growing number of developers across Africa, opportunities for growth are either difficult to find, expensive, or both. Similarly, developer communities struggle to remain sustainable, finding it difficult to host regular events, trainings and workshops due to the lack of infrastructure. Yet at the same time, companies in Africa are racing to keep up with the technological revolution, developing strategies for digital transformation, starting API businesses and figuring out how to innovate as quickly as possible. The number of untapped opportunities to create solutions on the continent is immense. The potential is there, and so are the opportunities, but who is bringing them together?

The Answer

Empowering communities through developer relations

Our team has a strong background with years of experience in developer relations, a field which provides the solution to fostering a thriving tech ecosystem. As a field Developer Relations is still young, with only a handful of technology companies building their own teams dedicated to DevRel. Essentially, developer relations is about building relationships with the developer ecosystem, and providing developers with the tools they need to be the best that they can be. We liaise between engineering-focused companies and local developer ecosystems, enabling companies to find and cultivate talent with relevant skill sets, and helping developers find employment and training opportunities to grow their careers. It’s a win-win!

Changing Africa,

Changing Africa, one community at a time

Africa is ripe with opportunities. What happens here over the next few decades will not only shape the future of the continent, but potentially the rest of the world. Join us in this revolutionary journey of growth, learning and problem solving to democratise technology education.
